Unification or Seperation?
A common concern with the Internet is whether it is unifying us or seperating us from the rest of the world. Some people view the Internet as a medium that connects us all together, while others feel it is does a great deal of seperation to us. In one sense the Internet unifies us as a world as it can connect people across countries and lets us in on information all around the world. On the other hand, the Internet can cause seperation on a more personal level because those of us who are 'hooked' to the web do not connect with people on any other basis than via the Internet. This then causes the loss of a less distant relationship and causes a more distant relationship instead, causing seperation.
Online Interaction Causing People to be Distant?
Distance is a major issue online especially when communication takes place. When relationships become more distant, they become weak, and when people continually spend their lives online instead of spending it among others, they seem to become more distant with the world. After a certain amount of time those who dedicate their lives to the online world strat to isolate themselves from the rest of the world out there. This can be a negative impact as it has been proven that we cannot live without human interaction. When people communicate online, they have a more distant relationship than thoses connecting face-to-face in most situations. It is hard to have a trusting and open realtionship when distance occurs as it is an unwanted feeling. Some online relationship are however not distant, but they are far in between.
What Else is the Internet Causing?
People continue to converse about if the Internet has negative or positive impacts, well, looking at the impacts we see on a regular basis will show us somewhat of what we are looking for. Many people fear that we are losing our ability to be independent, to learn for ourselves, and to be alone. As the Internet has approached it took many people off of their feet, and when it did, it convinced many that they cannot live without continually being connected. This has taken the life right out of some people as all they worry about is their online life while they isolate their face-to-face relationships. There are many concerns that people spend too much time online, which is true for some. People have gained the fear of being alone because they are always connected to the web, and the web has taught them they always need to be connected to the world or they will be left out. People have also lost their independence along with their willingness to learn for themselves as they rely heavily on the web to tell them everything they need and want to know. Internet addictions really are active in this world, and people can can the addiction and struggle to get rid of it just like any other addiction in the world.
